Bermuda Paradise - Hamilton
(July 31, 2003)
The capital of Bermuda is Hamilton, which was established in 1815. It's here that you'll find some locals walking around in Bermuda shorts with knee-length socks. Interestingly, there are strict rules to the length of these shorts -- they can be no more than three inches above the knee. Hamilton's Front Street is the place to shop in Bermuda, though prices are far from being bargains, the selections are generally first rate. In the midst of this lively street a British "Bobby" directs traffic from a booth known as the "birdcage."
Within walking distance of town is 19th-century Fort Hamilton, which offers wonderful views of the city and harbor. Other sights in Hamilton include Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, whose spire stands out over the skyline, Victoria Park's wonderful gardens, and Par-la-Ville Park, with its winding paths and Old World ambiance.
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), just a half-mile from Fort Hamilton, chronicles the many shipwrecks that have taken place off the island's shores, along with an exceptional Bermuda Triangle exhibit. The main attraction here is the seven-minute simulated underwater diving experience into Bermuda's underworld. Other places worth visiting around Hamilton are the Botanical Garden, which offers 36-acres of formal gardens, orchids, cacti and fern displays, and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.
