Bermuda Paradise - Beaches & Underworld
(July 31, 2003)
Beaches
Bermuda's Beaches are legendary; there are hundreds of them, from rocky gray coral to pink sand. The island's South Shore area offers the island's best Beaches.
- Warwick Long Bay is outstanding, a half-mile unbroken stretch of soft pink sand, and deserted dunes.
- Horseshoe Bay Beach, with its crescent of pink sand and paths of flowering cherry trees is a photographer's dream. When you tire of sunbathing and snorkeling, be sure to walk the limestone cliffs, weathered into fantastic sculptural forms, and gaze down at the azure-blue waters below.
- The trio of Stonehole Bay, Hidden Beach, Peel Rock Cove, offers soft, sandy secluded coves. There were few people at these Beaches and it was like having your own private beach.
- Church Bay located in Southampton Parish is the best place for snorkeling due to its calm waters that are shelter by reefs.
Other great Beaches include those near Sandy's Parish: Daniel's Head Beach Park, Somerset Long Bay, and Mangrove Bay. Tobacco Bay Beach is the most popular one near on St. George's.
The Underworld
Bermuda has the world's most northerly coral reefs and has been dubbed the wreck capital of the Atlantic. There are more than 400 wrecks here, which has made wreck-diving one of the more popular activities in Bermuda. If you don't dive you can try a "helmet dive" in just 10 feet of water whereby you don an old-fashioned helmet with air hose and walk along the sea floor among reefs and tropical fish.
