People come from all over the world to see Mount Rushmore; the most famous landmark in the Black Hills. In 1927, Danish sculptor Gutzon Borglum, with the help of 400 workers, carved the faces of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt into the side of an impressive granite mountain. Borglum's work is without question one of the most remarkable works in mankind. He spent 14 years working on it, until his death.

At 5,500 feet above sea level, Mount Rushmore's white granite face erupts from the forested landscape. The sculpture is called the Shrine of Democracy and has been declared a national monument. The Presidents' faces are 60 feet high and have amazing detailed eyes that seem to peer out over the landscape of the nation they helped create.

The onsite museum offers a detailed glimpse back to the monument's creation, and a documentary narrated by native son Tom Brokaw provides insight into Borglum's planning and construction genius. There are many hands-on displays like fake dynamite explosions that make it fun for even kids to understand the process of mountain carving. Hiking trails go around the base and allow for a unique straight up view. Other amenities include: amphitheater for outdoor events, gift shop, and a restaurant where you can 'dine with the Presidents.' When touring don't be surprised if you come face-to-face with Rocky Mountain sheep. While they look cute they pack some very sharp horns, so keep your distance.
