Grand Lido Negril
(January 14, 2004)
Owned by SuperClubs, the Grand Lido Negril is tucked into a secluded cove on a seven-mile beach overlooking Bloody Bay. This resort is a light and airy oasis of tranquility where everything is geared to make you feel pampered and special. Upon registration, guests are given flutes of champagne while relaxing in the white glass-atrium lobby that is bathed in sunshine. Grand Lido Negril is an adults-only 'super-inclusive', exclusive resort set among 22 acres. It's also multi-faceted, since it caters to both traditional vacationers and guests that prefer a clothing-optional environment. The resort is sectioned off to accommodate both styles in a dignified and comfortable manner.
Suites
This resort has 210 guestrooms; many were being re-furbished during my visit in early September. Penthouse and luxury suites offer internal whirlpool and outside hot tubs. My oceanview junior suite was located on the ground floor and was bordered by a gorgeous red-flowering hibiscus hedge. Best of all, it was just a few steps away from the beach.
Room decor is tropical with a sunken sitting room area, tiled floors, teak wood accents, and white walls. Amenities include: air conditioning, satellite TV, direct-dial telephone, CD player, coffee maker, hair dryer, ceiling fan, in-room safe, complimentary laundry and dry cleaning service, and iron and ironing board.
Dining
The food here is terrific and menus include locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, along with local seafood entrees many cooked in a spicy Jamaican style. Breakfast and lunch is served buffet-style in the Gran Terrazza restaurant where you will be entertained with live music. One of the best offerings in every dining venue is the unlimited quantities of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee - the world's finest. Dinner is served in three restaurants. Guests can choose between La Pasta for Italian food, Cafe Lido for continental cuisine, and Piacere, a formal French restaurant. After dinner drinks can be whipped up at one of the resort's nine bars. Those who don't wish to dine out can take advantage of the resort's 24-hour room service.
Activities & Entertainment
With so much abundant and delicious food, it's important to stay fit and get off a beach chair once in a while. There's a well-equipped expansive fitness center with a padded aerobic platform overlooking the bay. Open 24 hours a day, the gym offers daily classes in power walking, aerobics, weights and stretch. For an entertaining native twist take the aerobics class to reggae music. Two pools and five Jacuzzis along with two beaches (one clothing-optional) provide for soothing post-workout relaxation.
Golf is included at the challenging 18-hole golf course, Negril Hills. Greens fees and transportation is complimentary for resort guests. There is also a driving range on site.
Other sporting opportunities include four tennis courts (two lit for night play), with lessons and tournaments arranged by the resident pro, plus bicycle tours, beach volleyball, volleyball and table tennis. You can also enjoy windsurfing, sunfish sailing, water skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, underwater-vision boat rides and scuba diving with daily dives for beginners. A resort course in scuba diving is also available, and international PADI certification is available at an additional cost. Certified divers can take up to two complimentary dives daily. Indoor activities include backgammon, cards, dominoes, pool tables, and board games.
For evening entertainment, live music is on tap. Musical stylings ranging from jazz to reggae to mento music - a soft, harmonious mix of calypso and steel drums - can be enjoyed. If you find the evening's offerings too mellow you can take a walk on the wild side - literally. Grand Lido's guests are permitted to get an evening's pass to experience the nightlife at the nearby Hedonism II resort.
Spa Experience
Grand Lido Negril's spa boasts air-conditioned treatment rooms encircling a plunge pool for cool, post-sauna dips. To tend to both body and mind, the spa offers massages, hand and foot paraffin treatments, facials, body wraps and scrubs. You can even get a massage al fresco at a cliffside gazebo. Complimentary treatments include manicures, pedicures, steam and sauna rooms, plunge pool and the air-conditioned workout area. One tip, book your complimentary manicure and pedicure upon arrival as appointments book up quickly.
Special Touches
Want a touch of glamour? Unique to Grand Lido Negril is the magnificent 146 foot long yacht M/Y Zein. The yacht was originally a wedding present from Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis to Princess Grace. Offering daily sunset cruises along Negril's coast line, you'll be able to sip champagne just like the royals.
You can get married free of charge at all Grand Lido Resorts. They arrange everything from the documents to the cake. You just have to show up with the rings. Even ceremonies onboard the M/Y Zein
are included.
